How to organise and store your shoes
-
Bad smells, bacteria, dust, lack of space, and even visual clutter, all of this can be linked to what we wear on our feet every day. And sometimes, storing shoes properly can be quite a challenge.  Even if your home is super organised, if the shoes aren’t well “put away” (pardon the pun), it will always feel like something’s out of place.  We’re here to help you improve your relationship with your shoes.

Where should I store my shoes?
If you have more pairs than space, our top suggestion is to rent extra room with us, so you can store everything that’s taking up unnecessary space at home. At Control Space, we offer storage units starting from 1m² in several locations in Lisbon and Porto. You can check our space calculator to find out how much room you might need for the extra items in your home.  Your shoe collection, or even those out-of-season pairs you won’t be wearing anytime soon, will thank you.

Self storage is also the perfect solution for sneaker lovers and collectors. These items need to be kept in perfect condition, ideally in their original boxes, which requires extra space to store properly.
If you prefer to keep everything at home, make sure you manage your space wisely. Adapt the area to fit all your shoes, and follow proper storage practices. For example, you shouldn’t stack shoes on top of each other. That traps moisture in the most used areas and encourages unwanted fungi. Also, contact between soles and the top parts of other shoes can damage both the appearance and cleanliness of your pairs.
How should I store my shoes?
Avoid putting shoes away right after wearing them. As soon as you take them off, it’s best to leave them in a well ventilated spot so sweat and moisture can evaporate. If possible, avoid direct sunlight.
Ideally, have multipurpose cabinets at home. Vertical units with shelves and dividers make cleaning and organising much easier. To save space, go for cabinets with sliding doors that can also hold a mirror, solving two needs at once. The taller, the better.
You can also try creative shelving or shoe racks to store your footwear. If you have the space, why not get creative when organising your kicks? Shops like Leroy Merlin, IKEA, or Sklum have fun and practical options that can fit both your space and your style.

Shoes, being items that change with the seasons and are often collected or truly appreciated, deserve special attention.
The peace of having everything tidy, and the feeling that your organisation is under control, often comes from taking care of the little things, like your pairs of shoes.
Organise your life.
